A future worth paying for

Why we need to help young people find jobs, even if it costs taxpayers money.

AS HE PREPARED TO GRADUATE from Boston’s Fenway High School this spring, 18-year-old Dashawn Wilson of Mattapan went looking for a job. He’s attending Stonehill College in the fall and wanted to start saving up, he says, “so that my family won’t have to pay as much. I want to be more independent when I leave for school.”

Wilson submitted several applications to local businesses, but the process would always stop there. “I would never hear back,” he says.
