Turkish delight

Traditional designs get a worldly upgrade.

Artemis Design Co. came to be after designer Milicent Armstrong visited Istanbul in 2010. The 26-year-old Milton native got inspired by the fabrics she saw there, and now uses them in the shoe and accessories collection she designs from her South End condo.

Her footwear is a casual cousin to the smoking slipper, made from wool kilim and silk and velvet ikat fabrics from Turkey and Uzbekistan. Bags range from loosely structured totes to minimal cross-bodys. Each piece is one of a kind.

Armstrong suggests subbing in an Artemis shoe for a loafer or ballet flat. To top off the look, she picked out a few pieces, shown here, including a pair of bee-shaped studs from her mother’s jewelry shop. Like Armstrong’s designs, her style suggestions are classic with an element of surprise.
