JEFF I was five minutes early. She was five minutes late.

GENEVIEVE I was excited. I like meeting new people.

JEFF [She was] very attractive, nice smile, kind eyes, and well dressed.

GENEVIEVE He was cute but definitely not my usual type. He looked a lot like a friend from college, so I had to make a mental note not to accidentally call him the wrong name.

> THE VARIABLES

GENEVIEVE I apologized for being late and we talked about what we did before we arrived.

JEFF We talked about where we were from, our careers, and where we live now and growing up. We also talked about how we came to know the column.

GENEVIEVE I cheated and looked at the menu before I arrived. I knew I wanted chimichangas. The service was excellent, and I really enjoyed the shaved ice with a splash of tequila; it was a unique palate cleanser.

JEFF I ordered the crispy carnitas. The service was really good, as were the cocktails.

GENEVIEVE We both liked Mexican food. We talked about how fun it is to live in the city and how much we enjoy it.

JEFF I learned she originally aspired to be a history teacher, same as me.

GENEVIEVE I got less comfortable as the date went on. I got the sense that he liked me a lot more than I liked him.

JEFF I’m a very social person by nature, so I saw it as less of a date and more of a meeting with someone new, and thus was never uncomfortable.

GENEVIEVE He suggested we get drinks afterward. I felt the change of scenery was an excellent way to get a really good read on any potential chemistry. When we were at a new place and no sparks flew, I knew it wasn’t going to work.

JEFF I don’t believe in sparks on the first date.

GENEVIEVE At one point he was in the bathroom, and the bartender told me I looked apathetic. That’s when I lost all energy for the date.

JEFF I was having fun and looked forward to spending more time with her.

GENEVIEVE It was just one of those bad-chemistry things.

> THE SCOPE

GENEVIEVE I let him walk me halfway home and explained that I was an avid SVU fan and could not allow him to walk me any farther.

JEFF I kissed her.

GENEVIEVE It really threw me off.

> SECOND DATE?

GENEVIEVE No. I had a really nice time, and I think we could be great friends.

JEFF Up to her. I would see her again, but it takes two.
