> THE PREP

KAYLA I worked my regular day [and] was enthusiastic about the date.

DIRK I was in a wicked good state: Massachusetts, baby.

KAYLA I arrived on time; my date was waiting at the bar.

DIRK I was on GST (German standard time), a few minutes early.

KAYLA I looked forward to having an interesting conversation with someone new.

> VITAL SIGNS

DIRK The restaurant was not crowded. I noticed Kayla when she introduced herself to the maitre d’.

KAYLA He quickly stood up to greet me, and I gave him a hug.

DIRK I thought Kayla was very pretty.

KAYLA He surprised me at the beginning of our date with chocolates and an orchid.

DIRK She had a beautiful smile and warm eyes.

KAYLA He also threw in a National Enquirer, “in case I got bored,” he said. [It] made me laugh, but I also felt slightly awkward.

DIRK Kayla seemed calm and relaxed.

KAYLA Dirk dressed well for the date. He was tall, with a matching suit jacket.

DIRK We talked about our families, hobbies, jobs, the nightmares of online dating.

KAYLA I ordered a martini, he had water. I felt there could be a happy medium having one or two drinks with dinner. I’m looking for someone who may want to go wine-tasting or to a brewery. . . . I thought maybe he was worried that alcohol would impair his judgment of me.

DIRK We discovered we shared a lot in common. I thought Kayla was very comfortable to be around.

KAYLA The food was great and the service very good.

DIRK We both have a strong desire to give back through volunteer work.

KAYLA He loves his puppy; he showed me a picture of [her] in a lobster suit. She was cute.

DIRK She put up with my lack of wit, charm, and intelligence.

KAYLA He told me that his parents met on a blind date.

DIRK We had a long dinner and decided to have dessert at the restaurant.

KAYLA I was enjoying myself throughout our dinner date.

> BILL OF HEALTH

KAYLA I was hoping there would be some sparks; we have a lot in common. Unfortunately I didn’t feel any.

DIRK I helped Kayla catch a cab on Hanover Street.

KAYLA I gave him a quick hug because the cab was waiting.

> SECOND DATE?

KAYLA I think we could meet up again as friends.

DIRK Boston can be a tough place to meet people. The worst that could happen is you make a new friend.
