JILL I locked myself out of the house on my way out the door, so I guess I wasn’t as calm as I thought.
MARK I was calm. If everything went super poorly, then nothing really would have been lost, but if everything went well, then I was going to have an enjoyable evening and some good food, so not really a lot at risk.
JILL I am chronically early, so I tried hard to be just on time. I still arrived a couple minutes early, so I waited in the bar. Mark was running late, but he called the restaurant and the hostess let me know.
> CONVERSATION STARTERS
MARK I thought she was quite pretty and looked like she was around my age or a bit younger. She also looked smart, and I know that people’s appearances aren’t indicators of their personal qualities, but something about her eye contact and mannerisms made me think she was probably intelligent.
JILL Mark was easy to talk to. He asked me what I did for work. He is in law school and is really interested in civil rights and discrimination law, so our interests overlapped quite a bit.
MARK We also talked about the menu; I was trying to be self-deprecating and pointed out that the place was nicer than I was used to.
JILL We talked a lot about our careers and our need to feel like we were working to make a difference. We also talked about our paths that led us to our careers, which I always find interesting. We also both like trivia. He, unlike me, is apparently really good at it!
MARK I discovered she’s a school psychologist with a PhD, which made me happy. The most important thing I discovered is that she is intelligent, articulate, friendly, and engaging.
JILL As we talked more, I could tell that Mark was a really great guy. He was a great listener and clearly cares a lot about others. MARK I thought “I really like this person” when she spoke with a little bit of emotion and a little bit of conviction about her work and career.
JILL I was having a good time chatting, and we stayed out pretty late. At the end of the night Mark left to go back to school to finish up some work, so I felt bad that maybe I had kept him out too late as well.
MARK [We gave each other a] one-armed sideways half-hug. I didn’t think we had gotten so romantic that anything more intense was warranted yet.
> SECOND DATE?
JILL I think we may hang out again as friends/trivia teammates.
MARK I hope so. I asked for her phone number on our way to the T, and she gave it to me.
