> THE WARM-UP
RACHEL I went to my best friend’s apartment after work — she lives right around the corner from the restaurant. I had a glass of wine before heading over.
RICKY I didn’t do much to prepare for the date, just showered, got dressed, and made sure I was on time.
RACHEL I was excited and nervous. Knowing absolutely nothing about your date is nerve-racking!
RICKY I was excited — this was something new, and very different. I was confident I would have a good time.
RACHEL He was early and arrived first; I was right on time. I looked around the room and he was the only person sitting at a table by himself. We made eye contact, so I walked over there, assuming it was him.
RICKY We shook hands and sat down.
> OFF AND RUNNING
RICKY Rachel didn’t appear to be nervous at all. We got right to talking and it seemed like a normal date, as if we set the thing up ourselves.
RACHEL Ricky was very welcoming and friendly. That helped me relax.
RICKY During dinner, I discovered a lot about Rachel.
RACHEL We talked about our jobs, what we did that day, and how we both ended up signing up for Dinner With Cupid. We were both coerced by co-workers.
RICKY She told me how she is training to do triathlons and that, in the past, she has run the Boston Marathon, which I am currently training for.
RACHEL We discussed his training and how great an experience [the Marathon] was for me and will be for him.
RICKY She had a lot of good tips for me.
RACHEL Ricky is a very nice guy, so it was easy to feel at ease around him.
RICKY I was very happy to have been matched with her.
RACHEL Ricky was a perfect gentlemen and I really enjoyed getting to know him. Unfortunately, I didn’t feel that click, chemistry-wise.
RICKY Rachel and I certainly had some differences, but the stuff we had in common far outweighed any differences.
> FINISH LINE
RACHEL We got dessert.
RICKY [Before parting ways,] I asked her if she’d be interested in going out again, and she said yes.
RACHEL I gave Ricky a hug and he asked for my number.
RICKY We shared a very nice hug and said goodnight.
RACHEL He texted to make sure I got home OK, which was so sweet of him.
> A SECOND DATE?
RICKY I sure hope so.
RACHEL Ricky was a really nice guy, and I enjoyed going out with him. But I don’t think we are compatible and will probably not go out again.
