WHAT MAKES HER A CATCH

HER PERFECT DATE

Candlelit dinner on the beach, followed by dancing

7:30 P.M. FENMORE GRILL, BOSTON

> READY, SET

JULIO The place was not too far from where I work, so I brought a change of clothes and headed there.

KENIA I had class before the date, so I did very little preparation.

JULIO I had never been on a blind date before, so I was a little nervous.

KENIA Right before I walked in, I thought to myself, What on earth are you doing? It was more of a regretful feeling than a nervous one.

JULIO I was 15 minutes early.

KENIA I was on time. There was a sign that said “Seat yourself,” but of course I had no idea who Julio was.

JULIO Alas, I missed her entrance.

KENIA When the waiter came and said I could seat myself, I whispered, “There is a reservation under the name ‘Kenia/Julio,’ but I have no idea who he is.” I was so embarrassed; I could feel my cheeks getting red. The waiter was extremely nice and asked around for Julio.

> FIRST GLANCE

KENIA I liked that he was very friendly and comfortable saying hello; however, I immediately saw his arms full of tattoos, which I’m not at all fond of. I also noticed he was dressed extremely casually, not even showing the slightest effort to look sharp.

JULIO She was very well dressed. I was no slob with the way I dressed, but I said to myself, Did I totally miss the vibe of this venue?

KENIA He was not very talkative. I had to ask a lot of questions to get the conversation started.

JULIO [We talked about] some of the usual stuff, like if either one of us had been to [the restaurant] before and what we were doing career-wise and such.

KENIA We talked about our hobbies, where we were from, and laughed about the food.

JULIO We talked about Latin food as well as our mutual dislike for the Malta soft drink, and that we both like whiskey.

KENIA He kept looking down whenever we talked, so I don’t think he felt at ease.

JULIO She was really down-to-earth and easy to talk to, so I was more comfortable as the date went on. I thought she was cute.

KENIA I never got over the tattoos. He had a huge tattoo on his left arm. When I asked about what it meant, he said he wanted [it] to remind him to “rise from the ashes.” I immediately thought, If this guy needs a tattoo to serve as a reminder and keep him going in life, he is not my type of guy.

> BY THE NUMBERS

KENIA I had a school event. . . . I had to be somewhere else.

JULIO She had Uber pick her up. I walked her to her ride.

KENIA He was a gentleman.

JULIO It ended with a hug and a kiss. We exchanged numbers.

> SECOND DATE?

KENIA No. I think we are too different.

JULIO I would not be opposed.
