Letters to the editor of the Globe Magazine

Readers respond to our Globe Photos of the Year, a beloved chef’s farewell, and advice on gift-getting dilemmas.

HISTORY WITH THE HAMERSLEYS

[“Notes from the Kitchen,” December 14] Written with restraint, taste, and warmth — as he cooks.

Being a mensch (good person) and being in business: Gordon and Fiona show it’s possible. They did it with class. So miss you!

TIP-TOP CHEF

Israel Medina arrived here from Guatemala (First Person, December 14). He had no cooking skills yet due to hard work and willingness to work more than one job, he now finds himself as executive chef at BOKX 109 American Prime, preparing delicious prime rib dinners. His philosophy: “I make sure everything is OK here (at work) . . . and at home. Then I have a happy life.” Congratulations, Mr. Medina on the well-earned success!

Very nice story about a young man not afraid to work. No gaming the system for him. Congratulations on having made it in a very tough business.

GIFTED REDUX

I disagree [Miss Conduct, December 14]. If someone goes out of their way to think about you and spend their money on purchasing a gift, the recipient should remain grateful. Perhaps this person should tell her friend sometime next year that instead of exchanging gifts at the holidays why not get together and spend time together.

Put it on ebay and then use the money to buy her next year’s gift.

HOLIDAY CARDS CRITIQUE

[Examiner, December 14] Email does not cut it for some things. Like condolence notes, personal thank-you notes, keepsake baby shower cards. It’s the formality and the effort that sends the message.

Email works fine, and it’s cheap and just as “personal” as a card from a supermarket.

Only if art/visual graphics don’t matter to you. I like beautiful things, and emails aren’t.

Well, I checked my mailbox on the 17th. ONE CARD for me, and a card for someone who moved out over two years ago! As desperate as I was for Christmas Cheer and some affirmation that I matter as a person, I still gave the other person’s card back to the mailman. Boo Hoo . . . Poor Me. Oh well . . . at least I have my Christmas Candy to look forward to! Happy Hanukkah, Merry Christmas, Peaceful Winter Solstice to all!
