In a Chopped-style benefit at Boston’s Les Zygomates, seven culinary teams use surprise “black box” ingredients to create restaurant-caliber meals from rescued food. Led by restaurateurs Travis Talbot and Paul Bruno, the Ultimate Food Rescue Challenge supports Massachusetts hunger-relief organizations. Friday & Saturday, August 19-20

The POP Allston community space plays host to Boston Film Gala, a film festival and arts exhibition that wraps up with a “swanky-yet-casual” party. The event unites New England cinephiles for screenings of two dozen films — from three to 67 minutes long — and filmmaker Q and As. The 45th Festival of the Arts is back at Chase Park in Chatham. Paintings, wood and glass pieces, and other creations by 120 artisans will be on display and for sale. Treat yourself to something sweet from Eastham’s Chocolate Cafe Buzz Bus or something heartier from the Salt Block Food Truck. Kids can get their faces painted and create art themselves. On your mark, get set, milk! Go Pig or Go Home: 2016 Farmer Olympics brings farming, family fun, and fund-raising to Hancock Shaker Village in Pittsfield from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Anyone can sign up to face off in competitions like the Moo-Juice Squeeze (with live cows), the Wheelbarrow Waggle, and the Hay Bale Stack. The event benefits Greenagers, a nonprofit that provides outdoor jobs and environmental education for young folks. SKY HIGH

The Festival of Fireworks returns to little Jaffrey, New Hampshire, and pyrotechnics fans flock to the Silver Ranch airport for live music, food, and a sky-diving display. Gates open at 4 p.m.; the 32-minute fireworks show, produced by Jaffrey-based Atlas PyroVision Entertainment Group, begins at 9.
