MADE TO ORDER

MacKenzie My mom and I have been reading the article for years.

Duncan Online dating sucks. It’s also hard to meet people with my schedule.

MacKenzie I had classes all day and I don’t live in the city, so I’m thankful for Drybar Back Bay and the Prudential Center Sephora for helping me spruce up a little.

Duncan I showed up early and had a Jack and Coke to mellow out. She was slightly late. Fashionably late if you will.

MacKenzie I had trouble getting a Lyft. Duncan was sitting at the bar with a drink. His beard made me think he was older.

Duncan Her eyes were beautiful, piercing blue. She was wearing a well-fitting black dress. I remember thinking: classic.

ON THE MENU

MacKenzie The conversation picked up really easily. We talked about how we both have big, crazy families and agreed on a lot of the same issues at first.

Duncan We also got talking about law and politics a bit.

MacKenzie We ordered calamari and I got chicken piccata, which was phenomenal.

Duncan I had the Bolognese for my entree. The food and service were excellent.

MacKenzie I talk a lot, so being able to find someone who can both listen and effectively add to the conversation is really hard!

Duncan She spoke a lot, but she’s just that way. I actually like taking a back seat in conversations because I am usually the one maintaining the conversation. It’s soothing to just have someone tell me their story.

MacKenzie We geeked out over a lot of the same things. We both have strong opinions and are really passionate. As the conversation got deeper, I think we each had core values that the other would never agree on.

Duncan We did talk about fairly personal stuff that could be deal breakers, but we seemed to both be [into] it.

CHECK, PLEASE

MacKenzie We were so deep in conversation that we didn’t realize the restaurant was closing.

Duncan As someone who works in the industry, I wanted to settle up and leave. I awkwardly couldn’t get my jacket on ’cause it kept getting caught. I thought: “Great job, Duncan. Excellent final impression.”

MacKenzie It was pouring; we didn’t linger.

Duncan She had class in the morning, so we ended it outside the restaurant. We shared a good-night hug and exchanged numbers.

SECOND DATE?

MacKenzie I don’t see another date in our future.

Duncan I’m curious how a second date would go.
