As colleges go global, recruiting goes private

UMass Lowell, others turn to contractors for foreign students

Three University of Massachusetts campuses are using a company called Navitas to recruit foreign students and shepherd them through their first year of college. Such firms are a boon to schools who can not afford to do much recruiting abroad but want to bring in more international students, who pay full freight and diversify campus culture. But contracting with private recruiters can be ethically tricky. And the UMass Navitas students are facing hurdles, from learning intellectual basics to making friends.
