State unveils ‘mega-plows’

The state today unveiled one of five new “mega-plows” that will help it clear snow and ice more efficiently, part of an effort to cut costs of road-clearing by nearly half over two winters, Secretary of Transportation Richard A. Davey said. The state two winters ago spent about $1.9 million per inch of snow to clear highways and state roads. Savings achieved through the merger of various separate agencies – each with their own snow and ice removal methods and budgets -- into one Department of Transportation shaved that cost down to $1.3 million per inch last winter, with a goal of $1.1 million this winter, Davey said.
