Editor steers church paper into controversy

Catholic paper draws new criticism over old wounds

For more than 10 years, Antonio Enrique has played a mostly behind-the-scenes role in shaping the message of the local church through the weekly publication of the diocesan newspaper. He has steered The Pilot in strict fidelity to Catholic orthodoxy, in line with his background as a European lay missionary from a controversial religious movement far more conservative than the typical American cafeteria Catholic. “In many respects, many of the opinions voiced seem to be pre-Vatican II,’’ said Boston College historian and author Thomas O’Connor, a regular reader of The Pilot.
