Mass. taxpayers to gain bit of relief starting Jan. 1

The income tax reduction, from 5.3 percent to 5.25 percent, is the first in 10 years. It comes more than a decade after voters, in 2000, approved a measure that was supposed to take the income tax down to 5 percent by 2003. But lawmakers stalled the savings because of a rough economy. Yesterday’s announcement, which was triggered by a set of economic indicators, is a sign that the state is recovering, albeit slowly.
