MIT to launch online-only, graded courses for free
Certificates to be available for fee
The Massachusetts Institute of Technology, which pioneered open online learning 10 years ago by putting its internal course materials and lecture videos on the web, announced today a plan to launch a set of free, online-only classes that will feature high-quality simulations, short videos, discussion forums, and crowd-sourced grading under the supervision of MIT professors. Those who earn passing marks will be able to pay the school a small fee for a certificate. The course delivery software will be open-source, allowing other institutions to adapt it.
