Poor screening for $47m spent, state audit finds

The state probation department failed to properly screen criminal defendants to determine whether they can afford their own lawyer, leading to the questionable spending last year of $47.9 million in free legal counsel, according to a state audit that was released yesterday. The possible misspending comes at a time when overall spending for indigent defendants has come under scrutiny.
