Feds see no safety threat in thawing soil beneath Big Dig

Federal officials have affirmed the safety of the Big Dig tunnel spanning a swath of slowly thawing soil underneath the interstate highway where state transportation officials said the ground may have settled enough to create a water-filled void. Citing the results of an inspection, Federal Highway Administrator Victor Mendez wrote in a letter to US Representative Stephen Lynch that motorists using the subterranean highway system should not be concerned for their safety in the Interstate 90 connector tunnel.
