Former Brandeis University president is killed

Struck by car on N.H. street

Evelyn E. Handler was killed Friday after she was hit by a car while walking on a street in Bedford, N.H. Handler, 78, served as president of UNH from 1980-1983 before taking the same position at Brandeis, where she was president from 1983-1991. Handler the only female president in the history of Brandeis’, which was founded in 1948, according to the website of the Waltham institution. During Handler’s tenure, the university was admitted to the Association of American Universities, according to the statement.
