Cambridge police search for man who stabbed woman near Central Square

Cambridge police are searching for a man who stabbed a woman in the back as she was walking on Massachusetts Avenue near Central Square Tuesday night.

In an alert sent to residents, police said the woman was in the 800 block of the busy main street when she was attacked around 11 p.m. The woman told police she was struck once in the back with an unknown object.

The woman sustained injuries that were not life-threatening and is currently in stable condition at an undisclosed hospital.

Police released a limited description of the suspect.

In a notice sent to residents, police said the department has “assigned a team of detectives to focus on this investigation and are following up on a number of active leads at this time.’’

Police asked anyone with information to call 617-349-3300 or to provide anonymous information by contacting the Anonymous Crime Tip Hotline at 617-349-3359. Anonymous tips may also be sent via text message to 847411. Begin your message with tip650 then type your message, police said.
