3-alarm Beverly fire displaces 18 families

A three-alarm fire caused serious damage to a 24-unit apartment building in Beverly Wednesday night, displacing 18 families and causing millions of dollars in damage. The Beverly Fire Department received a call just before 8:30 p.m. Deputy Fire Chief William Walsh said that when firefighters arrived, three decks in the back of the building were completely engulfed in flames, and it took until about 1:30 a.m. to control the blaze. Walsh said the fire likely started on the ground-floor deck and may have been caused by “careless extinguishing of smoking material.’’
