Driver charged in fatal hit and run

A New Bedford man was charged yesterday with killing a man in a hit-and-run accident in Fairhaven, the Bristol County district attorney said. Richard Martinez, 33, turned himself in to Fairhaven police about two hours after he allegedly struck a man in front of 9 Francis St. around 11:45 p.m. Friday, according to District Attorney C. Samuel Sutter’s office. Martinez then allegedly drove off in his Ford F-150 pickup truck. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene. Martinez will be arraigned tomorrow in New Bedford District Court. The name of the victim was being withheld.
