Separating genders shows promise at Roxbury school

First grade students at Higginson-Lewis K-8 School in Roxbury are separated by gender in an effort to get them back on track. As kindergartners, the boys were academically unprepared, unruly, and hated school. Pencils were snapped, and fights broke out. There were almost daily trips to the principal’s office and repeated calls home. This year, there’s been a marked improvement in their behavior and social development, the school says.
