The House and the Senate have very different ideas about how to deal with repeat criminal offenders. So different, in fact, that the conference committee charged with crafting a compromise on the issue couldn’t even agree Thursday on whether to meet. The Senate version would crack down much harder on a lot more people; the House (and the governor) favor a softer approach. That violent crime and parole have both fallen matters relatively little in the drama.
