Absenteeism rife at Boston high schools

City efforts make meager headway

More than a third of all students in Boston public high schools were chronically absent last year, even as the city undertook creative efforts to lure students to school. At East Boston High, half of the students missed at least 19 days, more than 10 percent of the school year. The absentee rates were even higher at Brighton High, Charlestown High and Dorchester Academy. The figures illustrate the challenges most local high schools face in keeping students in class, and preventing them from quitting altogether.
