As a neighbor is rescued, fire kills Gardner woman

Drama, frustration at 6-unit building

GARDNER -- A woman was killed early this morning in a four-alarm apartment fire that tore through a three-story apartment building on Franklin and destroyed the structure, according to the Gardner Fire Department. Firefighters encountered heavy fire on the first floor when they arrived at the six-unit building around 2:30 a.m., according to Lieutenant Cleo Caouette of the Gardner Fire Department. Gardner Fire Captain Richard Ares said at the scene that the fire began on the first floor and quickly spread to the top of the building, which housed about eight to 12 people.
