Community colleges glad for new interest

But some doubt governor’s plan

Community college leaders and students alike said yesterday they welcomed attention from Governor Deval Patrick - who on Monday called for sweeping changes to the system - even as they questioned whether his plans would lead to a legislative brawl. In his State of the State address, Patrick proposed to focus the system’s mission on workforce training and centralize it, giving the Board of Higher Education new authority to appoint presidents and set funding for each school based on enrollment and performance statistics.
