Is Downtown Crossing on the verge of bouncing back?

Last week’s announcement that the Filene’s site downtown has a new developer raises the enticing prospect that finally, finally the huge hole at the heart of the city is about to go away. That would be sweet vindication for Mayor Thomas M. Menino, who has never stopped pushing for something to happen at the storied site. It may also unblock plans for the rest of the area, which has never quite become the thriving pedestrian mall once hoped for.
