Police subdue post-Super Bowl riot at UMass Amherst

Students involved in a disturbance on the University of Massachusetts Amherst campus after the Patriots’ Super Bowl loss face possible school sanctions, as well as criminal charges, officials said yesterday.

UMass Amherst police said about 1,500 people gathered in the Southwest residential plaza of the campus when the game ended around 10 p.m. Police said officers told the growing crowd to disperse at 10:08 p.m. after “the crowd became unruly and a number of fights broke out.’’
