What nerve! Lower the standards for all so the blacks can pass the test! Unbelieveable!!!

Oh, Great. Now when dumb kids flunk a test, they're going to be advised to sue instead of studying harder or finding a profession for which they are actually qualified.

What does memory have to do with being a Police Officer? Memorizing facts at a crime scene, policies, procedures ... silly things like that. What great leaders ... teaching black kids that they are not able to retain facts as well as others, so work the system to get ahead. Extremely sad.

try studying harder

The result of all this will be the creation of a Chief of Diversity position at $250,000 a year, two Assitant Chiefs of Diversity at $200,000 a year, four Associate Chiefs of Diversity at $150,000 a year, eight Diversity Field Officers at $125,000 a year, sixteen Diversity Field Supervisors at $100,000 a year, 32 Diversity Field Supervisory Assistants at $100,000 a year. Why, you ask, do the Diversity Field Supervisory Assistants make the same as the Diversity Field Supervisors? Because nobody in the Boston Police Department makes less than 100 grand.

I agree with Righteous, WHAT exactly is discriminatory? Are they saying they don't want to do a little math or do some critical thinking?I'm assuming it's the unions behind this stuff. They are the usual whiners. Oh, the test is too hard! Oh, It takes too much work to THINK!

It appears that the argument will generally center on the fact that because you have a very unequal outcome, there must be racism in the test by definition. I'm not sure the court will buy that argument. Funny to think that the original reason for having Civil Service tests to begin with was to level the playing field in response to blatant racism in hiring and rampant nepotism. The better argument might be that there exists a kind of institutional racism based on the Department's apparent refusal to institute a system of hiring that takes into account multiple criterion - which they now have the authority to do under law. In other words rather than figuring out what is best for the Department and the community they are taking a "we like things the way they are" approach.

rabt, the unions? How exactly did you make the jump from a small group of minorities filing a lawsuit to the unions? You, my friend, are one of the whiners you speak of that blame everything on unions. Read the facts.

I wish the article explained what the 'rote memorization' was that was required for testing. When I was a kid in school, I had tests that required memorizing the names of all the bones in the human hand, the major imports and exports of all the countries of South America ... stuff like that that I would never need to use again. Is that kind of information tested as part of the Boston Police test, or is it laws, policies, procedures ... things that are critical to the functioning of an officer?
