Deadline near, state gaming panel seats unfilled

Pay level may be narrowing candidate field

A number of potential candidates have bowed out of contention for a position on the state’s new gambling commission due to the relatively low pay for a job that will attract intense public scrutiny, leaving four of the five spots still open less than a month before the deadline for making the appointments. “The compensation has been a deterrent for some people,’’ acknowledged Treasurer Steve Grossman, who must appoint one commission member with experience in corporate finance and securities.

Why did Crosby take a pay cut to take this job? Is it really about the money or is it about the scrutiny?

Don't you mean "a number of hacks, insiders and money changers have bowed out......."?

Is it the salary or the increased scurity the US Attorney's Office has placed on graft and corruption these days? I thought what motivated most "public servants" is the potential for "perks" not the salary.

Of all the idiotic ideas - have the five yahoos that are supposed to oversee gamblingin Massachusetts choose the recipients of three of the casino licenses. Talk about setting up a situation sure to achieve the level of corruption that might have been expected in Prohibition era governments. There is no way the state should pile more bucks on the piles of cash that are being offered to entice party hacks to run the DeLeo-Patrick casinos this state government wants so badly to set up. Imagine... four casinos in one state the size of Taxashoosetts. And Coakley makes jokes ... like the one she told about being outside the ball park. Why don't Patrick, Coakley and DeLeo appoint themselves to the gambling commission. Patrick is going to need a job soon. Coakley has one, but for $112,500, she can quit and let a real lawyer take over the A.G. office. And as for DeLeo: he has thusfar escaped following in line with his last three predeessors, so that may say something about his suitability. And as for the fourth? There is surely a member of some tribe who can be found to keep peace among the tribes seeking approval of a casino license application.

No one is applying???!!The pay is too low - what a sorry excuse! It sounds more like we will be reading about the exhorbiant pay-hike in the near future! How about making the job qualifications and requirements public knowledge? There are qualified people who would consider the positions, other than the political hogs who want to come to the trough - but are concerned about the scrutiny of their inadequate qualifications!

$112,500? Ok, that's more than a toll collector and about the same as a fireman who works 2.5 days a week. But it's quite a bit less than most Boston cops make. Of course, the graft and corruption opportunities are terrific and after that big raise a few years before retirement they can plump up their pension considerably. Will it be a full-time or half-time job?
