Hockey dads, at least in stereotype, are already a beleaguered lot. An incident this week isn’t going to help their cause. In a head-shaking display of parental misconduct, the father of a Winthrop High hockey player shined a laser pointer on the ice at a girls playoff game Wednesday night, in a bizarre attempt to distract players on the opposing team. State athletic officials upheld the result of the game - a 3-1 Winthrop win - over protests of the losing side, Medway-Ashland.

What a jerk. I'd be in favor of "an eye for an eye" for this guy. Strap him up tight and shine a laser pointer in his eyes.
Just publish his name in the news paper.
Since the on ice officials determined that the laser light didn't affect the outcome of the game, why not hand out free lasers to the fans on the way into the game. For extra measure flash the "non-obstructive" light into the eyes of the officials and then listen to each of them say, "Hey, no effect on my ability to call a game." Also, if it wasn't affecting the game, why remove the dad? Did the on ice officials explain why the father of the year was removed? What will be the procedure(s) if this happens again?
Why is this idiot's identity being protected?
I love these posts!!! I was just sitting here telling my wife that we'll soon find out who he was and then he might want to move away for a while. He deserves way more than he dished out. Let's see if he can take it. This is one case where I hope the family of the goalie files a lawsuit. Consumer Lasers clearly won't burn the retina but that's not to say damage wasn't done. Some ambulance chaser can drag this out long enough to break this useless P.O.S financially. I can't wait until someone posts his name and/or address!
The Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association should immediately null & void the game score and the win by Winthrop High School. Ice officials? Isn't it there job to pick up litter thrown on the ice by the fans? What kind of laser was this man directing at the goalie's eyes? Lazers are limited to five milliwatts, and the effect on the eye can be several times the illumination of the noonday sun! One retailer was selling 100-milliwatt pointers that are 20 times more powerful than what the law allows. The police need to be involved with investigating this scenario & the man with the laser.
Withrop is very close to Logan: The man is too stupid and very dangerous to have a laser pointer.
and this isn't a crime?
Why isn't he charged with assault?
This from last April 2011 - http://www.boston.com/sports/schools/hockey/articles/2011/04/14/hockey_tourney_was_a_nice_score_for_miaa_this_year/?camp=misc:on:share:article "There were other topics, led by a discussion of middle school waivers and cooperative teams in girls' hockey. Lincoln-Sudbury athletic director Nancy O'Neil spoke on behalf of a subcommittee formed to look at all aspects of the girls' tournament. There were 15 cooperative teams this past winter. In addition, middle school girls are allowed to play on high school teams, after obtaining a waiver from the MIAA's District Committees, and a number of schools were successful because of the play of seventh- and eighth-graders. Winthrop/Lynn made it all the way to the Division 1 semifinals led by eighth-grade goalie Katie Burt. And Acton-Boxboro did that one better, facing Hingham in the Division 1 state final at the Garden led by goalie Cali Loblundo, a 12-year-old seventh-grader. The spirit of the rule allowing cooperative teams and middle school students is to help teams survive when participation is low. But committee members expressed concern that it could be used simply to get a better chance at winning. Shine asked if the answer was to pass a rule that cooperative teams and teams using middle school students be barred from the tournament. Maybe that's the way to go, he said." Fast forward - Interesting to see that Winthrop continues to use 7th graders as Goalies - two of 'em - even though there's a pretty healthy roster selecting skaters from 4 schools - Winthrop, Saugus, and 2 Lynn HSs. There's a trend, a theme....... MIAA address it!!
Hi didn't shine it in anyone's eyes. Just at the ice. Why is this any different than fans trying to distract basketball players when shooting foul shoots by waving balloons or big fingers or anything distracting? Why is this not just like NFL fans who try to distract opposing teams by hollering and yelling to prevent them from hearing signal calls? Fans try to distract. And laser lights are just another harmless means to do so. There's rules about no whistles in the crowd, but until they make rules prohibiting lasers this guy has done nothing wrong.
Let me break it down. He was a grown up, a parent. They are high school kids. You see nothing wrong, even beyond the damage that lasers can do to the human eye?
If the MIAA can't do the right thing, and void the game, the Winthrop girls have it within their ability to show some class and most importantly that they understand sportsmanship and possess honor. The should not accept a tainted win. It might be painful to take this course because of the actions of one player's parent, but their sense of honor would be one of the most positive and newsworthy sports stories of the year. And prosecute dear old dad to the full extent of the law. Sounds like society would be a little better off for the years he is locked away.
Where is his name? It should have been in the first paragraph. At the very least he should have to suffer the embarrassment of having his name in the paper.
These are not NFL players, they're high school kids: if you can't see the difference, then I'm not going to even try. However, you are incorrect: laser pointers are not harmless; they can damage an idea, even with quick contact. It is is an non-consensual contact, unlike yelling or waving.
Shame on the dad. Sounds like a sad excuse for a parent and parenting skills.
I agree with the others...why is his identity protected? Why isn't this a crime. What if the goalie had been hurt while being distracted by the laser? There appears to be some sort of cover up by the media, the MIAA, and law enforcement.
Sorry but this is America! Win at all costs! You know what they call the team playing Winthrop? Losers! What a bunch of bleading heart trophy for all losers and wimps, and I bet you support food stamps and feeding hungry children and other socialist stuff like that! If you went to church enough and listened to the teachings of Christ you'd realize winning, money, and dumping all over the losers in life is Christ's way!
Who is this jerk? Let's get his name out there. He should be held accountable for what he has done.
Wyseguy: He did shine it in the face of the goalie: Pam O'Sullivan, the mother of a Medway-Ashland player who attended the game, said the quarter-sized beam of light bounced quickly around the goal area and often came to rest right on the goalie's mask. "You could see the green flickering off the metal of her mask,'' she said. "After we scored that first goal it really intensified. It was moving all over.''
What a bunch of ******'s the MIAA is made of. When you consider the way they treated that football player from Cathedral High for raising his hand as he made a touchdown it takes a lot of gall to give Winthrop a pass over the actions of this father and when you consider that this is not dear old dad's first offense it's even more disgusting.
