Police make arrest related to homicide

A New Bedford man has been charged in connection with the death of 33-year-old Melvin Pina, whose body was discovered in a New Bedford back yard on Saturday morning, according to the Bristol County District Attorney’s Office. Jose Carrion, 26, is charged with assault and battery and witness intimidation. He is being held in custody overnight and will be arraigned Monday morning in New Bedford District Court. On Saturday morning, police received a 911 call at around 7:30 about an unresponsive man lying in a back yard on Bates Street. When police and paramedics arrived, Pina was dead. The homicide investigation is ongoing.
