UMass contract may set precedent

Agreement covers top research aides

After almost two years of bargaining, some 200 unionized postdoctoral students at the University of Massachusetts Amherst ratified a contract yesterday that sets a minimum salary of $38,500, provides a two percent raise, and guarantees several new benefits including health insurance for families. The contract is the first of its kind at UMass. It sets a precedent for the Boston and Dartmouth campuses and could have a ripple effect at other universities, where postdocs are increasingly critical to research.
