Democratic US Senate candidate Elizabeth Warren told a newspaper serving Washington’s gay community this week that President Obama should “evolve” and support gay marriage.
“I want to see the president evolve because I believe that is right. Marriage equality is morally right,” Warren told the Washington Blade in an article published Wednesday.
Warren’s comments came in response to a question that referenced Obama’s previous statements that he was “evolving” in his stance on gay marriage. Warren, according to the Blade, chuckled as she delivered her response. Obama has been an opponent of gay marriage, but has courted gay and lesbian supporters with hints that he may reconsider his stance.
Warren, a Harvard Law School professor and consumer advocate, is the leading Democrat trying to unseat Republican US Senator Scott Brown.
In her interview with the Blade, Warren offered limited praise for Brown’s support in repealing the military’s ban on gays and lesbians serving openly in the military. She told the newspaper that she would be a more consistent advocate in supporting lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender issues.
“I’ll be there on every vote,” Warren told the newspaper. “I’ll be there not just to provide a vote, but leadership, and I think that’s what the LGBT community really needs.”Noah Bierman can be reached at firstname.lastname@example.org. Follow him on Twitter @noahbierman.
