Pupils spell-bound at 5th annual citywide bee

Almost 100 onlookers gathered in the Great Hall of Faneuil Hall Saturday morning to watch 22 Boston Public School students, ranging from fourth to eighth grade, compete in the city’s annual spelling bee. The first few rounds thinned out the competition quickly, but words like “hierarchy,’’ “anomaly,’’ and - perhaps most challenging - “waterzooi’’ stumped the finalists as they spelled their way to the Scripps National Spelling Bee, the nationwide competition in Washington, D.C., this May.
