A Suffolk County grand jury has handed up indictments against former state Treasurer Timothy P. Cahill on corruption charges after his campaign allegedly used $1.65 million in taxpayer-funded state lottery advertising to boost his floundering gubernatorial bid in 2010, a top state law enforcement official said today. Cahill was charged with directing the state Lottery to launch the media blitz that was designed to run up from mid-September though the November election. The indictment cites public corruption.

The only thing suprising here is ..gasp!!! Martha Coakley indicted a state official...finally!!! I guess the written smoking gun emails were too embarrassing to ignore. I guess if you are in office long enough, even a dope like Martha can eventually stumble across doing the right thing.
Cuz I love that dirty water...YEAH, BOSTON YOU'RE MY HOME!
Just another day in Massachusetts the most corrupt state in the country!
Seems like small potatoes compared to the other crud that goes on in this state.
Refresh my memory. Is Cahill a Democrat or a Republican?
His crime was splitting the non-incumbent vote and getting Patrick re-elected. I wish Martha Coakley had spoken up before that damage was done.
Of course, every time Menino appears on the city-sponsored T.V. station (30 times a day- always for something positive), or prominently displays his name on a city-sponsored sign at a construction site, or is pictured above the fold on the newsletter of a city agency, that doesn't help his political career one bit. No sirree.

Not even close. Corruption in Mass is peanuts compared to many other states. People like you like to claim this is the most corrupt state, but that's such an ignorant statement that I'm embarrassed to think you might be a resident. Of course all corruption is serious and should be stamped out wherever it's found, but we're amateurs. Try New York or California... or Alabama.
Why is it the working class politicians - Cahill, O'Brien - are the ones being indicted for activities that are routinely done by others? Is there some Brahmin elitism at work here?
The Globe said "Cahill.. becomes the first statewide... officeholder in the post-World War II era.. to be indicted on corruption charges... relating to his official duties.." thereby parsing Massachusetts political corruption five ways. It's like the People's Choice Awards. I guess we're supposed to guess: Who were the statewide office holders indicted on corruption unrelated to their official duties since the original V-J day? Who were the local office holders indicted for corrupt official duties, just since the last anniversary of V-J day? How many Massachusetts speakers of the house have been found guilty of, indicted for, accused of or investigated by the Spotlight Team for corruption since V-J day (easy question: all). But another category is needed: what Massachusetts politician hit the trifecta and got indicted or at least indicted in our minds at all three levels of government: local, state and Federal? Still the undisputed rascal king!
Good girl Martha! Now all you have to do is put the rest of the criminal pol's in jail and there is a lot of them. You have to arrest "Mumbles" for helping illegals stay here and operate their criminal enterprises.
Bill Galvin has relentlessly plastered his name and face on advertising for years. Tim Cahill does not mention his name or put his picture on ads that ran a couple of months and he gets indicted? This case is pathetically weak, just like our AG. Cahill will be aquitted.
Cahill should be put in jail for being stupid. I recall hearing those ads and thinking to myself what a "coincidence" it was that those ads would be run at that point of the campaign. It's incredible how corrupt this state has become! State officials are so brazen they foolishly leave paper trails and other obvious evidence to get indicted. Off with their heads!!
It's actually pretty simple. Members of the legislature and local officials aren't elected statewide. If someone steals from their business partner, that's not state business. Got it now?
You're assuming all of Cahill's votes would have gone to Baker. Studies have indicated that at least a third of Cahill's votes would have gone to Patrick, so he would have won anyway.
Who are all these Brahmins that are holding state offices? Off hand I can't think of any.
