Demand for kindergarten seats in the Boston public schools for this fall has risen by more than 25 percent, an unanticipated increase that has left hundreds of students without an assigned school and has prompted school officials to add more classrooms. The boom surfaced in the past few months during the first round of registration for kindergarten classrooms that will serve students who will be 5 by Sept. 1. The School Department received 2,306 such applications, up from 1,823 during that same period last year.

2011 with BPS Redesign and Reinvest Plan "The schools to be closed include: the Agassiz Elementary in Jamaica Plain; the Alighieri Elementary in East Boston; the Emerson Elementary in Roxbury; the East Zone Early Learning Center, Fifield Elementary and Middle School Academy, all in Dorchester; the Farragut Elementary in Mission Hill; and the Hyde Park Education Complex, meaning the loss of two small high schools there, the Engineering School and the Social Justice Academy" 2012 not enough classrooms for our children. Last year the Superintendent and the School Committee, the Mayor and all the City Councilors told us we had too many empty seats and ripped these schools out of our neighborhoods. Now we don't have classrooms for this years children. They will force them into rooms with no strands or plans for continuation making parents go through the process again for first grade. The truth is their plan backfired and the private charters were not prepared to take over the spaces quick enough. Our tax dollars are meant for public education. Every elected official and administrator in BPS tried to sell us out and now they have egg on their face. Call City Hall and let them know your frustration. Public education is a right we pay a lot in taxes and do not deserve substandard facilities.
