Careless outside smoking blamed in Dartmouth apartment fire; 35 displaced, $2m in damage reported

A fire that destroyed a 16-unit Dartmouth apartment building, causing an estimated $2 million in damage, was caused by improper disposal of smoking materials on a second-floor porch, authorities said today. With more people smoking outdoors, more home fires caused by smoking are starting on the outside of buildings, authorities said. State Fire Marshal Stephen D. Coan said it was important to keep "deep sturdy ashtrays or cans filled with sand or water for people to dispose of their smoking materials" where people smoke.
