Yvonne Abraham

2012, how I miss thee

US Senator Scott Brown and Mitt Romney, the presumptive GOP presidential nominee, have taken half the population for a ride in the way-back machine. Having lost ground with women after the brouhaha over contraceptives coverage earlier this year (shockingly, a lot of women believed birth control ceased to be a hot-button issue decades ago), our state’s two most prominent Republicans have been trying to win them over. But their attempts to establish their lady bona-fides have been ham-handed. And singularly unconvincing.

Your kidding right, they should be focused on the economy, healthcare and jobs, we have a president that hasn't governed in 6 months, too busy campaigning. We have a part time governor, also too busy campaigning.

This completely false diatribe does not address the fact that Romney and Brown have a patriarchal view of the world. It also seeps over into the other problems you mentioned as they both also believe some people are more entitled to simple survival than others. Both their views on the economy will make things worse for both sexes and their so called tax reform will raise your taxes not the opposite. As for healthcare their words speak for themselves. They think what we have now is just dandy unless we can figure out how to make people pay even more to support their health insurance industry, medical device makers, and for profit hospital backers. It is not that they are out of touch but just think the 1950s was the pinnacle of our civilization.

The woman's issue of free birth control was the gift to the Democrats. It was such a non issue, because most health insurance plans cover birth control, WITHOUT a government mandate. But this was the chance for the left wing to pounce, and declare, as Yvonne does, that Brown and Romney do not "get" women. Trust me, most women are smart enough to understand that Brown's vote on the Blunt Amendment was simply a way to chip away at the over reach of Obamacare. But the the Democrats had their moment, and have run with it. Yvonne's column was one of many, following orders from the DNC to follow this narrative.

The answer is simple. Don't elect either of these rich frat boys this year.

In 1953 Hannah Arendt was interviewed on the occasion of her delivering a series of lectures at Princeton. In response to what seemed, at the time, an obvious question, she said, "I am not disturbed at all about being a woman professor...because I am quite used to being a woman." She did not want to be seen as an exceptional woman or an exceptional Jew, according to Annette Baier. My experience of her in 1970-71 was that she did quite enjoy being both a woman and a professor. I certainly enjoyed her as both.

I get it, Yvonne. We women aren't interested in the national debt being passed on to our children, in international issues, in the waste of our tax dollars by the GSA. We think birth control is actually an issue this year. We can't take a joke, no sense of humor, really. Bunch of dumb broads, easily manipulated by liberals.

What you miss is the 60s, when the pill was just coming into play. Women did have a hard time getting that and other forms of birth control. This is a non issue today, any women who want birth control can get it and a years supply is not cost prohibitive. This is a Democrats political ploy. Just as the majority of Prominent women's groups have become mouthpiece for the left and the Democrats. The women's movement use to be for all women not just the ones who share your political agenda. You and many others like you had sold out that movement and have become pawns of the left. Your attack on conservative women had been pathetic.

You are clueless about the cost of birth control. "The Pill" might not be cost prohibitive for middle-class women with health insurance, but for someone who is barely scraping by from day-to-day and has no health insurance, it certainly is.

Did Yvonne actually write this or am I in a time warp?

Loved your column, shared on FB.

Men who use the term "Moms" when describing women view women as breeders.

"Political campaigns have better things to do than pit women against each other." Boston Globe's editorial board 4/14/12, regarding women hater Hilary Rosen. You can't make up this stuff up...

Brown and Romney are twins separated at birth...liars, manipulators, poll-watchers and bullsh!tters without a principled bone in their bodies. Neither could give a hoot in hell about what women think or want or need and both are caught in a time-warp that features barn jackets and big hair rather than anything of substance. Both are fused to corporate power and both will sell out the average working person without batting an eye...believe these two at your own risk.

Yes, all moms are working moms and are on-call 24/7. And yes, holding down a job does give you a sense of pride, dignity and being able to stand on your own two feet. I don't see the two statements being in conflict. And who says mons working outside the home aren't poor? The working poor? They carry an extra burden, striving to find a way out. If you can find a job these days, consider yourself lucky. If the government will pay to train you for a job and get, which is what Romney was alluding to, consider yourself luckier. Most likely they will also pay for daycare, subsidized housing and food stamps. This will give poor moms a hand-up so they don't have to continue taking hand-outs.

Maybe you should think about your own views before putting a label on the person you share your life with. I'll bet dollars to d-nuts that if she is as liberal as you say she is, she goes along with whatever YOUR views are in a vain attempt to make her life somewhat bearable. You brought her into the conversation - fair game.

It is not the national debt that is causing our present problems. Also would you like to point out when our national debt was the source of poor opportunities or decreased national wealth? What your children should worry about is the shriveling of opportunity because those that are suppose to be the entrepreneurial class play a zero sum or negative sum game by shifting the medium of exchange to their side of the ledger and just leaving it there to the tune of 1.7 trillion dollars. It is their unethical behavior that got us into this soup. The government did not force anyone to do the wrong thing. They search and search for a loophole instead of an honest dollar. Instead of thinking they are so clever, we should realize if you are willing to cheat or lie, anyone can seem brilliant. They have the opportunity not only to make more bucks for themselves but actually gain the admiration for patriotically investing in American workers. Our foreign mess comes from butting in where we don't belong. The so called waste of tax dollars is minuscule compared with unfairness of the tax code and undue influence of lobbyist, mostly Republican friendly.

Brown is a misogynist and I think we all knew that when he tried to sell off his daughter the night he was elected. It's always a "joke" but why are his jokes always at women's expense? Yes, it's the economy stupid but I think we can demand equality and dignity with that economy.

Read the column and understood all the points. But gave it more thought, and it came to me! Yvonne is in the same boat she is writing about. She is out of touch!

If suggest you make an attempt to counter some of Yvonne's arguments instead of resorting to ad hominem attacks. While not as snarky and pithy, your post would carry some weight. All of her opinions are backed-up by facts. Brown did in fact vote for the Blunt amendment. Brown's wife did in fact say that (among the myriad of other things she might have said) she could teach him to cook. He also was not out of character when he talked about Hillary Chabot getting drunk and dancing in the back of the news truck. Hillary isn't one of those Republican strategists over at the Herald but apparently just a straight reporter so I guess she was fair game for sexist comments. Brown and Romney are both going to have significant troubles winning over women in this election, which could be, if done right, a cakewalk for the GOP. With regard to Romney, I sense desperation. He's now trying to compare his strapping of his dog to the roof, (a decision he made as an adult) to Obama eating dog meat in Malaysia when it was given to him at seven years of age. Those are comparable right? C'mon.

Good point, potlemac, about men calling women "moms" as if they mostly see them as breeders. But what is it with all the WOMEN, especially the politicians, who keep calling themselves "moms" as a primary identifier? I can see "good mom" somewhere in the resume, but all by itself, "mom" doesn't say much that it wouldn't say about most living female creatures, like squirrels.

I believe Ms. warren has to win a primary before she runs against Brown. What is wrong with letting companies decide what benefits it wants to give?

Anyone find it interesting that women have been hurt the most by this economy? More women lost there jobs under Obama then men. Not one word from the far left extremists. I'm not a republican, but the far left knows that Obama can't run on his record. You people are looking desperate. Ms. Abraham should be calling out Obama for not creating jobs for women. It's always agenda before people with the globe.
