Man with immunity in ’08 slaying charged with perjury

Alleged killer to be charged later

A Billerica truck driver allegedly sat in his Ford Expedition smoking crack while one man stalked and another man murdered Northeastern University student Rebecca Payne inside her apartment in 2008 - and then lied to authorities even after he was granted immunity, a prosecutor said Monday. With the parents and former roommate of the slain woman looking on, Michael Balba, 55, pleaded not guilty in Suffolk Superior Court to four counts of perjury. He was ordered held on $100,000 cash bail by Trial Magistrate Gary D. Wilson.
