The travel itineraries for Liberty Mutual’s fleet of five corporate jets read like the table of contents of Travel + Leisure. There were at least six trips to Hawaii at a cost of about $90,000 apiece. There was the 2010 trip to Venice, Italy. There were multiple trips to Palm Springs, as well as to Santa Barbara, Monterey, and Napa Valley, California, none of which are bustling commercial centers. There was a trip to Barbados in 2008, Barcelona in 2009, and Jamaica in 2010. There was a pair of flights to Augusta, Georgia. I wonder what’s there.

Fire the advisers who coined the phrase "accounting issues'' to justify your $50 million a year compensation package. Seriously, off with their heads.' Forget the advisors. Off with Kelly's head and all the other craven capitalists i.e. Romney, who loot companies for their personal benefit. Nobody has a problem with success and the just rewards it brings, but more and more a class of people is being revealed that can only be categorized as criminals. So seriously, off with their heads.
Again, keep up the great work Brian in exposing these ludicris salaries while people in this great United States of America are starving. Have they no consciences?
Good that you continue to beat the drum on this one, Brian, though it's not at all clear who's really able to get it at this point. There are several audiences for this issue. First is the small gaggle of people who are in pulling in the money. Clearly not limited to Liberty Mutual, that crowd is smiling all the way to the bank. They believe, with some justification, that they are untouchable. They could care less what you, or anyone else supporting you, has to say about the situation. Next are the folks who think they'll get into that crowd, so they don't want to make a fuss. You noted Deval as belonging to that crowd. He's one of them that will get there, if he's not there already. Most of the rest of those folks are dreamers. Then there's the huge stadium filled with folks who either don't understand, or are simply not paying attention. They're not going to make waves. It's left to the few folks with vision and a social conscience to continue to shine the light on the toxic waste dump known as legal money hoarding by the business bosses of western society. How many teachers could be subsidized by a slightly more sane allocation of resources? These people are sucking money out of the system. When plain folk pony up for an insurance policy which they mistakenly believe will make family life better, that leaves less money to pay for schools. It also leaves them less money to pay for goods and services throughout the rest of their lives. This includes the local restaurant owner who's going out of business because nobody comes through the door, the local furniture maker, and so forth. This is trickle down economics for real. The more money the few have, the less money everybody else ends up getting. Economists aren't going to like that portrayal. They're going to say that resources are unlimited, blah blah blah. The evidence is plain for anybody to see who's truly looking at the whole picture.
Now this is why I still subscribe and read The Boston Globe everyday (albeit on my iPad)! It's called investigative journalism. If they weren't a mutual company I guess I'd say go ahead and overpay this gluttonous jerk. But that money is supposed to go back to policy holders. To all you lemmings who quietly pay the man and never question authority, this is what the people with real balls and integrity were / are protesting on occupy wall street. Thank you Brian. You are what they call a reporter. Not many of you left.
Particularly galling to me is the fact that William Van Faasen, chairman of Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts; and Marian Heard, former head of the United Way of Massachusetts Bay, both NON PROFIT organizations, feel that they have no need to respond to our City and State's pre-eminent newspaper when challenged in this manner. Note to Mr. Van Faasen and Ms. Heard: Your "business" existence is a function of your mission to represent your key constituents, including we the taxpayers, who subsidize you. Respond!
Thank you, Mr. McGrory, for keeping this issue in front of the public. As long as these people think what they do is above and beyond the average person's understanding, excessive pay packages such as these (at so-called "Mutuals" and "non-profits" - really?) will continue unabated. Shame on everyone involved with these "compensation packages". Keep beating that drum, Brian. We thank you.
It must feel good to attack individuals. If you want to change this, you must lead the attack on the tax laws in this country. People are just taking every advantages that they can. As human beings we all do. Just see how many people here are willing to make a contribution of extra tax dollars to MA - very, very few. How many people take advantage of early retirements, extra pensions, extra sick days etc. - this is happening every day.
Sign this petition to revoke the Liberty Mutual subsidies: http://www.green-rainbow.org/liberty_mutual_tower_subsidy_petition Let's get our $46.5 million back and use it for schools, libraries, and T services! And it won't hurt Liberty Mutual a bit. They never qualified for it and they don't need it. Sign and forward to your friends.
As human beings, not everyone does that. There are people who are trying to help their fellow citizens, wether it be in their profession or at a food pantry. There are numerous examples. Newspapers are struggling financially-so there are too few reporters such as Mc Gory. We can't wait for the whole system to change in order to call attention to the problem.
Great article Mcgrory! And Im a tea party republican...its just as important to get guys like these who DONT own these huge companies to stop taking all the cash for themselves while they cut jobs, outsource and dont give out pensions anymore. Keep going with these articles.
I think it's far more than jsut tax laws. Actually, I don't think tax laws play into this situation. What's at play are interlocking boards of directors and ignoring obligations. CEO of A sits on tbe Board of Company B; and CEO of B sits on the Board of Company A (and, so on). They scratch each other's backs and approve absurd compensation packages, while ignoring their fiduciary obligations to their shareholders to prudently manage the company.
Brian, Just echoing what others have said, thanks and keep up the good work. I am hard pressed to believe that $10 - 12 million cannot bring a top executive. Maybe I am a little light but I know it is no where near $50M.
Great stuff, Brian. Keep the pressure on. These people deserve all the embarrassment and contempt that (hopefully) comes their way.
Obscene, that's all it can be called. And that Mr. Kelly would attempt to brush it all off as a minor accounting glitch is indicative of the contempt these executives have for the rest of us.
This will be the last article about this. You watch...the Glob will go away from this after today...probably in the name of some sort of ridiculous balance. They'll go after a black woman on welfare who got $20 more than she was entitled to and bought booze and smokes with the extra windfall, and some Tea Party racist will say some coded blather about all those "urban" welfare queens ripping off all of us...especially those of us with jobs...and we all know that those "urban" people don't like to work! Please! The rich will weather Mr. McGrory's current diatribe against American greed and go right on saying they are indeed worth every penny...I mean every million! Grow up!
uh no mcgrory, that $46.5 million dollar tax subsidy which you refuse to talk about was provided by the hapless and clueless governor, the blihering nitwit bagman mayor buddy of yours, and helped along buy a totally gutless and corrupted city council with a great push from the globies favorite watchdog, that being liberty mutuals own shill samuel tyler. oh ya, all that and 10s of thousands of buckos in campaign contributions from kelly to guess which governor and mayor. ma
Now interview Menino, Murphy, Consalvo, Deval and the rest of them about the obscene tax breaks this guy got in order for him to fly to Hawaii every weekend. After all, everybody's "friends" oveh heah! As everyone else said, keep up the good work, McGrory. Here's something I did on Liberty Mutual awhile back, in the context of Chuck Turner's prosecution: http://www.examiner.com/article/chuck-turner-and-the-culture-of-legal-bribery P.s. Hey Shirley Kressel, I noticed some goofball from Northeastern did a hit piece on you in Boston Magazine a few weeks ago. I wonder who put him up to it?
yawn
Like you, Mr. McGrory, I am just a hard working person making a "regular" salary. But your article is off base and misleading. You do not point out out that when Mr. Kelly took over at Liberty Mutual, they were almost bankrupt! Some of the stock that he accepted then was probably almost worthless. It was certainly a "leap of faith" for him to do that. Should he have cashed in that stock when it wasn't valued so highly? Would you? That is just basic smarts. Shareholders at Liberty Mutual have received more dividends because of Mr. Kelly's management of the company, not less. Pick on Bank of America, who is "too big to fail" and who charge abusive fees to regular working people who are their customers!
Keep up the good work Brian, although, in the big scheme of things at Liberty Mutual, what's the big deal about a $90,000 flight to Hawaii when your CEO is making $24,000 an hour? If you could fly an employee for half a day's pay you're doing pretty good! Deval's too concerned about the rights of illegal immigrants, prisoners getting cold tuna fish sandwiches and selling his bs books to step into this fray. He's just like the rest of our politicians with their eyes on their post-political careers in the private sector where they'll be making obscene amounts of money working the system. Together We Can!!
All my policies are with Liberty Mutual. Every year my rates have been increasing more than I ever estimated. I called and complained about that fact last year. Hearing this makes me wanna start shopping for a new insurer. I thought I was doing good helping a local employer. After this BS - forget it!
While it makes me mad to keep reading about this corporate greed I enjoy reading about Ted Kelly getting tossed under the bus and continually ran over! Nobody is worth that much money! There should be some way for all the policy holders to fill a class action lawsuit over excessive compensation and make him pay it back. I've said it before, but it should be said again. Everybody who has a policy with Liberty Mutual should start calling and demanding they be able to use the corporate jets. They are helping pay for them so why shouldn't they be able to use them. It is a mutual company where the customers own the company and the planes are part of the company so give them a call. I bet they would return that call about as fast as they return calls from Brian.
Keep it up Brian, keep it up. And then delve into some other corporations. They are all the same. Our nation is run by a corporate mafia.
this company is the worst, and all of us should boycott them. Lets start the movement. Worst or as bad as goldman sachs, aig ...walmart...defines greed, arrogance, and deserves our contempt. ugh
I was thinking of jumping off the Liberty Mutual ship and swim over to metLife but when I looked at what the CEO pulls in per year why bother. I looked up the compensation for the head of Met Life and its not that much different. The base salary was $1,000,000 but he received over $21,000,000 million in 2007 , $22,000,000 in 2008 , $11,000,000 in 2009.
