Harvard University is joining the Massachusetts Institute of Technology to offer free, online courses under the superbrand “edX.” The announcement instantly makes it a major player in the burgeoning online education sector. MIT announced in November that it would create special courses featuring discussion forums, short videos, and laboratory simulations. Harvard will do likewise. The universities also plan to collaborate on research into how students learn online, and to use their data to improve education for their paying students.
