Man breaks into Westport daycare after daughter mistakenly locked inside

A man broke into a Westport preschool this week after his daughter was accidentally locked inside.

The father told Westport police that he went to pick up his daughter from Westport Country Day Preschool on State Road in Westport at 5:30 p.m. Monday and found the building closed with no staff around.

He told police that he called family members to make sure no one else had picked up the girl and began looking through the windows of the building when a staff member arrived.

When they heard the girl crying from inside the building, the father “forced entry” and found his daughter in the bathroom.

Police determined that the last staff member had left after a “last search of the building” only minutes before the father arrived.

Police said the girl was mistakenly listed as having been picked up.

Antonio Cestodio, a detective and spokesman for the Westport Police department, said the daycare has not had problems in the past.

“They’ve been in business for decades and we’ve never had anything [like this],” Cestodio said.

The Department of Children and Families were contacted.
