In the famously liberal city of Cambridge, there has been but one place to legally buy a gun or a rifle for the last several years, while also picking through some wading boots or canoes, all under the peering gaze of a giant moose head. But now change has come to Porter Square, and Roach’s Sporting Goods is about to close its doors after 108 years in business.

You never know why your customers shop for what they do: I bought lead shot at Roach's for years in order to make weights to use in the repair of fine prints and drawings at the Fogg Art Museum. I'd carry the 25-lb back back to Harvard Square on the 77 bus ...
What a shame - I've always enjoyed stopping by before a camping trip. If there was ever a place to encourage responsible gun ownership, this was it. I certainly never percieved a conflict between "liberal Cambridge" and the guns for sale here, as this article is trying to suggest. But maybe Cambridge has collectively been so unwelcoming to those who support responsible gun ownership that those who would shop here have moved elsewhere. Now there is even less diversity in the city that purports to be all about it.
Two lessons: 1) if you want to run a business for the long haul, then you must own the building. Over the last 25 years here in Cambridge we have seen too many good local businesses fall by the wayside, the victim of greedy landlords. 2) Once a tenant moves out, there is a tendency for the property to sit empty and abandoned. The property owner should consider whether it would be better to keep the lease affordable and the store occupied and in business than to lose money on an empty boarded-up storefront.
Oh- one more thing. They are so much more than a "gun store." That is the least important of the stuff they provide to the community.
We sell guns? In Massachusetts? Most of you who know my profile know I'm a flaming liberal on most things - not guns! I don't own any because I have small children, but I support all gun owners except for assault rifles! This is a shame!
