Elizabeth Warren fumbled through her worst stretch as a Senate candidate this week, setting off a debate among strategists over whether the controversy over her claims to Native American ancestry would linger when the November election is closer. Warren’s campaign won’t say when top advisors learned that she considered herself part Native American, an issue in her biography that seemed to catch them off guard.

In my opinion, at its core this in not about Warren. Thrusting a person with no political and campaigning experience into the Massachusetts political arena may be the worst miscalculation made by the democratic party power brokers.
Another horrible non story. Our media is completely and utterly broken. Good work Globe! You have truly enlightened the constiuents of Massachusetts! Next up, "Scott Brown, Truly 3.8% Scottish?".
Guess what folks our backgrounds and heritage in this country is a patchwork quilt not an a blanket woven from a single cloth. For too many years people hid from view their natural human feelings to draw closer to another human being. Society branded them as an outcast and not in the mainstream. It was even worse if you had any of the anthropomorphic features of those human land dwellers. As usually happens views start to change. Because of various means of survival and cultural contributions it turned to pride in what has stitched us together. It also showed a willingness to break tribal taboos and look deeper into the person who stands before you. On Harvard's side perhaps this came with some nudging and realizing their past deficiencies on this matter they decided to go along by taking some interest and value in knowing how pieces of all of us were truly put together. It was a feeble start to honor what had heretofore been scorned. Ms Warren obliged by noting some of her ancestors for whatever reason but certainly not to denigrate the Cherokee Nation. Some smaller minds immediately and without justification assumed her claim was untrue especially since her facial and body shape did not fit any long held stereotypes. As far as we know it had no role in advancing her career and among professionals with similar stories or more obvious heritage it was not the talk of the town. Yes, surprise, surprise, we all have a strong interest in our ancestors and their stories. Elizabeth Warren is guilty of telling hers and because it appeared in an imperfect forum the forest has given into the trees and our past biases. For political purposes and without merit her opposition thinks they can wipe out her impressive credentials and her substantial contributions to this country. This opposition research is mean spirited and a backward mindset. It is time for such self righteous people to quit pushing us back to times when liberties for some were horribly suppressed.
And while you are blurting about, explain the relevance of your father being a janitor.
A winning response from Warren would have been a mea culpa. She should have come clean, and admitted that she was seduced by the minority fixation that is so prevalent in our society, particularly in academia. She should have then announced that she would work to reverse this damaging trend, that places greater importance on race and ethnicity than on competence. She would have soared in the polls. But the way she played it, it will dog her until November.
I am a fairly left leaning person and I find this candidate obnoxious. This is the best we have? That rant about people who have made it in business not doing it on their own because they "used our roads to do it" was embarassing. Scott Brown really doesnt even have to campaign, Warren is imploding on her own.
Since no one put you in charge and you admit it is a game your view puts it in the dismissible category. There is not one shred of evidence this advanced Ms. Warren's most notable career and contributions. She is competent and has more than once shown this. Your crystal ball is just a political toy and part of Republican thinking that thrives on making any of the opposition's past history bigger than life missteps. There is nothing for her to apologized for since she did nothing wrong. And please I have had enough of dog stories.
And the Boston Globe and its coterie of swashbuckling political scribblers appear to be leaping onto the pile with this latest Saturday morning update tale of the travails of Senator Wannabe Lizzy Warren... Wait until Saturday Night Live gets ahold of this stuff: One of the most powerful Demohacks in the state weighs in on Lizzy and her tribal yearnings: "The question is whether and how she used a minority status to gain or not gain access to employment.' Robert A. DeLeo, House speaker" The Globe typists outright question whether Lizzy was honest with her own campaign staff about this American Indian heritage topic: "The Warren campaign will not say when top advisers learned that she considered herself part-Native American, but it was an element of her biography that seemed to catch them off guard." And the Globe scribblers do Lizzy another favor - offering the all-important unaligned voter blocs an idea of how the Demomob assesses Lizzy's love of handling money, especially when it comes from folks other than herself and those closest to her: "Many Democrats have taken the long view, emphasizing the excitement on the left around her candidacy, her ability to spend $1.6 million on a new ad campaign…" Then there are, of course, all those references to Lizzy being naught but what the Globies call "a rookie" seeking a national political office and to recapture for the Demomob the one-party congressional label that lefties are so proud of... Poor Lizzy, being pounded and not being given a fair chance to undergo her campaigning o.j.t. absent opposition from those dam Republicans... oh... and, now it seems, maybe more than a few Democratic soothsayers...
Since there were only 40 full blooded Wampanoags in 1815 (total for all 5 tribes). There is great probablity that most of the Wampanoags in MA have as much Native American blood in them as Elizabeth Warren's genealogical claims of 1/32 Cherokee. The Wampanoags are given full tribal rights and get lots of federal and state funding. I alway assumed that the purpose was to fund and protect a race of people, Native Amercians, yet that race really doesn't exist in MA anymore.
Warren had one bad week . the Scottster has lapdog Eric so every week is a potential disaster for him.
People who have made extensive travel in the Midwest and the West, from the 60s to the 80s, should know Native Americans were treated poorly, worse than the African-Americans in those areas (Latinos in the same areas are now feeling the similar discrimination now) That is to say, claiming to be part of Native American heritage is a statement of courage, not some cheap shot to curry EEO favors. Only in recent years, with the casino and oil & mineral rights, this has become all the rage Trail of Tears may have happened a long time ago, but people should read Dee Brown's "Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee" before they think being Native American is a competitive advantage in life

Mrs. Warren not only cheated real minorities, she gave the finger to every hard working caucasian women by cutting the line in order to advance her career. So much for Women's rights. You can't get any lower than Warren.
Also, it has come out they Warrens 3% native American might only be 1% because they think that her great-great-great-great-great grand mother was only half. Out of one hundred professors and associate professors at Harvard Law, Warren was the only one who did not go to at top 10 law school. Out of 350 professors at every Ivy league law school, only TWO professors did not go to a top ten law school and Mrs. Warren is one of them. If you saw what life was like for real native Americans on reservations, you would find her abuse of the system insulting to everyone.
Elizabeth Warren seems very determined to prove that her hiring was not the result of affirmative action for her Native American ancestry, but base on merit. Because, apparently she believes that the best candidate would be someone who earned their position in life base on their abilities only. Very interesting.
A nice story...put a feather in her cap!
Me thinks that Lizzie "Litttle Feather" neeeds to go back to the reservation.
What needs to be added to the article is the shameful Boston Globe editorial on the subject. Sanctimoniously declaring that Warren has the right to self-identify any way she sees fit is spin worthy of an adolescent. She can say whatever she wants in private, but she's running for public office, and she identified herself as a minority in a public directory. Further, the Globe should provide context that shows just how silly Warren's claim is of listing herself as a minority in order to meet other like-minded people. (E.g., there's a separate group that other Cherokee law school graduates join, that Warren didn't bother with, Warren hasn't shown any interest in the issues (legal or otherwise) affecting Cherokees, etc.)
In a 1998 editorial celebrating the law school's award of tenure to — how to put it? — great legal scholar Lani Guinier, the Harvard Crimson noted: "Harvard Law School currently has only one tenured minority woman, Gottlieb Professor of Law Elizabeth Warren, who is Native American."
I do NOT give a rat's petuti about Warren's direct or indirect ethnic status of Indian. THIS is how insane politics has become and we KNOW full well by the LIES Republicans utter ALL the time that they will use ANYTHING absolutely ANYTHING to discredit an eminently qualified candidate most especially if it is a Democrat. Brown should watch out or that brown jacket will be shown to be a mink stole. He is using this NON issue becasue he is significantly INFERIOR to the fabulous Elizabeth Warren. I have said 1000 times she is a price above rubies. Massachusetts should consider itself LUCKY that she is in our corner. Brown not only is FOR the 1% he IS the 1%. Do not be foolish, Massachusetts, vote this woman in while we have the chance. One candidate that is as EXCELLENT as she may never appear again. Brown v. Warren? NO CONTEST. Warren wins hands down. Media, GET OFF THIS DUMB NO MEANING ethnic issue. It means NOTHING in comparison to the economic woes our country has faced. Ms. Warren will hold the banksters' feet to the fire. Why? Because she knows how to do it!!!
If this candidate was a Republican, the Liberal media would be hounding her day and night and demanding that she drop out of the race already. Academia in America is sowing the seeds of this country's self destruction by poisoning the minds of tomorrow.
^ This is what the Massachusetts democratic party has been reduced to.
I hope that letter was written in jest because if not, it is one of the most ridiculous things I have read on this site in a long time. And that's saying something!
First of all this was in the '90s and dictating what people should or shouldn't do is not what is supported by the Constitution. It is always amazing those who want the ability to act in any way they want are quite happy to tell others how they should behave. This is quite revealing. There is a theme in these negative comments today that show an ugly discomfort with persons of different backgrounds. You seem to saying if you are an Indian then you have to act in a prescribed way. Seeing the world through xenophobic glasses is destructive and eventually a non winner. Since I support Ms. Warren, keep exposing yourself, others should be aware of this ugliness that erupts on the slightest provocation. By the way Elizabeth Warren has worked for everyone including you.
Just what minorities did she cheat and how? The evidence is to the contrary. I guess you have the right to hate no matter what. However without real data, your position can be dismissed.
