Plan to dig up field for movie nixed


Columbia Pictures quelled a brewing controversy Thursday by declaring it will not use Marblehead’s high school football field to film a scene for Adam Sandler’s film ‘‘Grown Ups 2.’’ Many local residents, including the school’s football coach, had objected because the plan called for digging up the field and installing an inground swimming pool and a basketball court. Columbia had offered to pay $125,000 to Marblehead, where it is filming most of the movie, to restore the field afterward, but the restoration would have taken up to two months and interfered with the fall football season.
