Harriet Berman, 63; helped cancer patients to reach out

A clinical psychologist in the field of psycho-oncology, Harriet Kasloff Berman provided a haven for patients who faced a cancer diagnosis, just as she had - twice. “I am so aware of the cultural reticence to speak of cancer and death,’’ Dr. Berman once wrote. “Yet over time, as people find the language to do so and allow others into their reality, the benefits on all sides are profound.’’ Dr. Berman “felt a calling to help individuals with cancer,’’ said her husband, Stanley Berman, who also is a psychologist.
