Debasing the debate

It’s easy to see why US Senator Scott Brown and his campaign love the controversy over opponent Elizabeth Warren’s claims of Native American heritage. Here Warren, a smart, formidable candidate, has managed to look pretty silly. And so she has given Brown a gift, which he and his campaign have used as a very useful distraction, and a way to engage in the dog-whistle politics of race. The first is understandable, the second reprehensible.
