Bunker Hill Community College opened its first food bank last week, becoming one of many schools in recent years to confront campus hunger - an issue that has failed to make its way into mainstream discussion even as debate swirls in the Legislature over reforms to the community college system. The problem has intensified as adults, often out of work and with families to feed, flock to community colleges for retraining.

This is such a tragedy. Both of my parents were teachers, and I value education as the highest of human endeavors. To see these hardworking young people who are trying to educate themselves and become productive members of society resorting to food banks, while the GOP votes FOR letting the rates increase on their student loans...well, it's just an outrage. Here we have the multi-billionaire Facebook co-founder, Saverin, renouncing American citizenship to evade paying taxes to the country that allowed him to strike it rich. That's right, gouge and squeeze as much as you can, then take your loot and run. Very patriotic. Very responsible, and charitable. What happened to the old values of kindness, reciprocity, and generosity? Instead we have economic neo-liberalism: greed, ruthlessness, and more greed. Sociopathology: the callous disregard of others.
I'm really glad to see this article highlighting the problem, not just as a policy discussion but showing the human dimension. May it bear fruit.
