Roxbury Community College gets financial aid, three months late

For about 1,400 students at Roxbury Community College, the checks are finally in the mail. And the mad scramble to get them out is just another sign of the dysfunction choking what should be an important Boston institution.

Disfunction has been a way of life at Roxbury Community College for too long. If the college was in Cambridge would this sort of misfeasance and malfeasance been allowed to fester for all these years? It is time to fold the college into Bunker Hill CC and allow the Bunker Hill CC administration to take control of Roxbury CC. It is a tremendous disservice to the neighborhood and the students at Roxbury CC to allow political correctness to trump responsible management. The students deserve better as does the faculty of the college. The top administration at Roxbury is responsible for this mess, time for them to go.

From the day RCC was established, I wondered how it would succeed. The education hierarchy in the city was already notorious for its institutional racism; one could only imagine the hurdles in store. Put an incompetent in the lead, and those who hired the person would sit back and say to his or her inevitable failure, " See, I told you so." Put a competent person in the lead, and every tactic of sabotage and subversion would frustrate his efforts. In the meantime, the students would be the losers (as they always have been). It's no surprise that Bunker Hill CC has seen a benefit in RCC's troubles. That's the idea, isn't it--to give more to those who already have. When I see articles on campaigns to attract minority talent to Boston, I wonder how many folks would want to take on any piece of the public education challenge.

If this school snafu doesn't reek of a foul odor nothing does. Perfect spot for State Auditor Sue Bump to start an inquiry on. This looks like the tip of another EBT scandal. 30 years ago the same thing with this school. Get rid of the entire administration and have Bunker Hill run the place as BHCC @ Roxbury Crossing. Simple. Start digging Suzanne!!!!!!!!!

Why should these students be getting checks to go to school? Why not loans at a market rate? If the "education" at this community college is worth it economically, then students should be willing to borrow money if the interest rate is low enough to support the increased earnings over the rest of their careers. Why do we need the government at all? Where is the market failure.

It seems incredible that it could take that long to check the individual records of 1600 students. Comparing the schedule of a student to a list of acceptable programs by hand should take about 10 minutes per student, or three and a half work days for 10 people to check them all. This is an issue of priorities, and apparently getting the students their financial aid isn't a priority. (NEW PARAGRAPH) @Hibiscus: We are in the 6th year of the administration of an African-American Governor. The college president and most, if not all, of the Trustees are members of the minority community. This isn't a question of institutional racism. This is a question of whether we're all going to allow the students to get screwed by administrators who don't seem to care about the success of their students.

President and all VPs need to apologize and move to a more suitable place for their incompetency, RCC students need help from Governer's Office. Mr. Patrick replace them and take it over.
